The Deload Week: What It Is and Why Most People Skip It

A deload is a planned week of reduced training — lower volume, lower intensity, or both — inserted into a training programme to allow accumulated fatigue to dissipate before the next training block.

Most people skip it. They feel fine, they are making progress, and a week of lighter training feels like wasted time. This is the wrong frame.

Fatigue masks fitness

During a hard training block you accumulate both fitness and fatigue. Fatigue is quicker to accumulate and quicker to dissipate than fitness. This means your actual performance at any point during a hard block is lower than your real ceiling — the fatigue is sitting on top of it.

A deload removes the fatigue faster than it removes the fitness. The week after a well-executed deload you will often hit new personal bests not because you got stronger during the deload, but because you could not see your real strength through the fatigue before.

What a deload looks like

There is no single protocol, but a common structure:

  • Volume deload: Keep intensity the same, cut total sets by 40-50%
  • Intensity deload: Keep volume similar, reduce weight to 60-70% of normal working loads
  • Full deload: Both — lighter weight, fewer sets, shorter sessions

I prefer volume deloads. Keeping the weight meaningful prevents the sessions feeling completely pointless, but the reduced volume means systemic fatigue recovers quickly.

How often

Every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on training age, life stress, and how hard the preceding block was. Newer lifters can often go longer between deloads because their volume ceiling is lower and recovery is faster. Advanced lifters may deload every 4 weeks.

The cue is not “I feel wrecked”. By the time you feel that, you have probably waited too long. Deload before you need it.

The psychological piece

The hardest part is the permission to do less. Consistent training feels like progress. Doing less feels like falling behind. It is not. It is the mechanism that makes the next block of consistent training possible.
